Details
Botticelli’s Primavera is printed like a decal onto the painter’s back himself. By means of different shades of colour, Botticelli’s “springtime” nearly becomes “autumn”.
Magritte explained that for this piece, he had focused on creating a painting that married both Primavera and the man with the hat. He claims that he chose this image for its pictorial value but was not interested in preserving its allegoric sense attributed by Botticelli.
Provenance of the original artwork: Private Collection
